Our Mission
The mission of the Basic Needs Committee is to assist the needy from within Nativity Parish and around Eastern Monmouth County with the essentials of daily living such as food, rental assistance, utility assistance, security deposits and pharmaceutical needs. Our work is financed by contributions to the poor box, the contributions from the candle donations, certain Sunday collections and donations made directly to the Basic Needs Committee. In an average week we assist about three clients at $300 per client. We work closely with the local St. Vincent DePaul Societies, Project Paul and Catholic Charities as well as the parishes of St. Mary in Colts Neck, St. Leo in Lincroft, St. Anselm in Tinton Falls and St. Anthony in Red Bank. We also sponsor special projects throughout the year (see below)

Our Fifth Sunday Collection 
Approximately four times each year there is a fifth Sunday in the month.  On those days the second collection is used to support our efforts.  This is our primary source of funding and we are very grateful for the generous support we have received.

Here is just one example of the good work your donations support:

This winter we teamed with eight other parishes to assist a family in need of a furnace. The family includes a husband,wife and three children, one of whom has special needs.Last fall Mrs. T. was diagnosed with cancer, underwent stem cell treatment, followed by chemo, etc. She lost her job and benefits but was able to obtain insurance through Affordable Care. Her husband works full time. When the furnace could no longer be repaired and had to be replaced in the midst of this very cold winter, the family together with the help of all eight parishes was able to purchase a new furnace. 


Once again, thank you for your generous support of this very important work.

During the Holiday seasons Basic Needs will be collecting non-perishable items for our holiday food baskets. Basic Needs provides a holiday meal for approximately 50 families in the surrounding areas. All of our bags are filled with items that are donated, entirely, by our church community. Specifically, we are looking for

  • boxed potatoes 
  • packages of stuffing 
  • canned vegetables and fruit 
  • gravy 
  • cakes 
  • cookies and brownies mixes 
  • cornbread mixes 
  • soup and pasta. 
Items may be dropped off to the boxes located by the doors of the church and at the entrance door to religious ed. We thank you in advance for your generous donations.

Advent Project

Eudes Foundation USA
This Advent Season, please make a donation to the Basic Needs Committee in support of The Eudes Foundation, a non-profit organization in Colombia dedicated to protecting children living with HIV/AIDS and who have lost their parents to the disease. Currently at five locations, they provide a home, food, clothing, education and medicine for 50 children who have been orphaned.  

In addition, a portion of your donations will be used to support the ongoing efforts of the Basic Needs Committee, directly helping those in need locally. For each $10 donation, we will place an ornament symbolizing your gift on the Nativity Christmas Tree. Thank you for your generosity!

As in past years, we will also be collecting Christmas gifts for seniors living in nursing facilities. Please consider purchasing a gift for a senior citizen - wrap and label the gift (male or femaie) and return it to the Christmas Tree by December 20th. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

School supplies will collected starting with Vacation Bible School and continuing thru August.


Weekly Food Collection

The food pantry is still in need of non-perishable food. We provide food to St. Anthony’s,St. Dorothea’s and Christ the King Churches. 
Items needed are pasta, sauces, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni & cheese, canned foods, toiletries, cereal, etc. (please check expiration dates). St. Anthony’s is requesting donations of small bags of white rice. Items may be dropped off in boxes at entrances to the house of the Church & also at the entrance of religious education.

Approximately four times a year, the Basic Needs Committee sponsors the purchasing of supplies and preparing of about 135 meals to be delivered to either The Center in Asbury Park or HABCore for the benefit of their homebound clients.  This endeavor welcomes anyone who wishes to participate.

loaves and fishes
Our parishioners will cook and serve dinner the 3rd Friday of every month to approximately 150 people at Lunch Break in Red Bank.

Volunteers are needed to prep and cook 8:30 - 10:30 am in the Nativity Parish Hall kitchen on the Thursday before the 3rd Friday of each month. Volunteers are needed to serve at Lunch Break, Red Bank 5 -7:30 pm on the 3rd Friday of each month.

This will be an ONGOING, monthly Community Outreach Ministry, so the more volunteers involved the less of a commitment each person will have to make. No cooking or serving experience necessary!
